Stretchable resorbable ELECTRODES for heart monitoring

Making artificial implants for therapeutic purposes from soft, stretchable materials improves the mechanical compliance with soft living tissues, resulting in reduced inflammatory reaction and improved device operation. In addition, fabricating implants from biodegradable materials avoids the need for a second surgery to remove the device after its period of use, which avoids damaging the fragile surrounding tissues and organs. The goal of this project is to develop electrodes for the heart that are both biodegradable and stretchable.

This project will be performed in collaboration with surgeons from the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.

Assignment

The student will perform the assignment at ECTM:

  • Duration: 9-12 months
  • Location: ECTM and EKL facilities at TU Delft

The expected activities

  • Synthesis and characterization of biodegradable conducting material composites
  • Microfabrication and characterization of arrays electrodes

Characterization of the electrodes in vitro on cardiac tissues

Requirements

You are an ambitious student looking for a challenging thesis project on new materials and microfabrication of electrodes for medical applications. You have a biomedical engineering, material science, mechanical or microelectronics background. Good communication skills in English and a pro-active attitude are expected.
