Biodegradable wireless MICROHEATERS for application in medical implants
Biodegradable Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems open new perspectives to crucial medical challenges.
Microfabricated wireless microheaters are a key element in many biomedical applications, either to remotely control the actuators in implantable MEMS devices (e.g. to control the movement of a bimorph membrane in an implanted micropump), or to apply a heat treatment as a therapy on human organs (e.g. hyperthermia treatment against cancer). The project consists in developing a new generation of fully biodegradable and wireless microheaters for medical applications. It will be performed in close collaboration with prof. Ekkes Bruck, from the Faculty of Applied Sciences at TU Delft.
Assignment
The student will perform the assignment at ECTM:
- Duration: 9-12 months
- Location: ECTM and EKL facilities at TU Delft
The expected activities
- Synthesis and characterization of two types of biodegradable material composites
- Microfabrication of biodegradable wireless microheaters
- Development of a setup to control the microheaters and assess their performances
Requirements
You are an ambitious student looking for a challenging thesis project on new materials and microfabrication of MEMS for medical applications. You have a biomedical engineering, material science, mechanical or microelectronics background. Good communication skills in English and a pro-active attitude are expected.
