PhD Candidate in GaN Packaging for ALL2GaN Project

Opening for: PhD student

Status details

Status:Open
Announced:07 Aug 2023
Closing date:06 Oct 2023
Duration:4 years

The development of GaN semiconductor devices and GaN integrated solutions has been accelerating as the needed technology, more than 40 years after invention of the first GaN HEMT, is on path toward its maturity. There is a fierce global competition to capture the technological and market opportunities that are opening for application-ready and easy-to-implement GaN solutions. European industry has to catch up with international competition but it has a solid point in GaN market and, even more important, also the capability to enhance its competitiveness and catch up with competition by increasing the industrial research and innovation and being at the forefront of the industrial exploitation. In this context, ALL2GaN has a strong ambition to address the challenges that the consortia have identified to fulfil real market needs and for the highest impact. The overall ambition, to make the last step toward full GaN industrial readiness by targeted approach for different in specific applications needed solutions, will thus be addressed with R&I in all necessary fields.

ECTM group is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our team in the ALL2GaN project. The successful candidate will work closely with a team of researchers and industry partners to develop advanced packaging solutions for Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices, with a focus on minimizing parasitic loop-inductances and reducing power consumption and footprint of GaN systems.

The candidate will be expected to design, fabricate, and characterize novel packaging solutions for GaN devices, and to contribute to the development of new interconnect concepts and materials. The candidate will also be responsible for presenting their research at scientific conferences and publishing papers in top-tier journals.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in materials science, electrical engineering, physics and mechanical engineering or a related field, with a keen interest in semiconductor device packaging and integration. A power electronics-related background and experience in the RF field is a bonus.

The candidate should be highly self-motivated.

The candidate should be a team player.

Additional information

In The Netherlands, almost all PhD positions are linked to funded research projects. This has several implications:
  • PhD students are employed: they receive a salary rather than a grant. Most projects have a duration of 4 years.
  • Positions become available once a project is funded. This can happen at any time during the year.
  • It typically takes 6 to 9 months for a project proposal to receive funding. In this period, a position may be anticipated but the outcome remains insecure. Once a project is funded, the open position needs to be filled as soon as possible.

If you are interested in our research, it merits to inquire whether openings will be available. We collect resumes of prospective PhD students throughout the year, for each of our research tracks.

General requirements

We make our selection based on the following general requirements:
  • Formal requirements regarding prior education: you should have earned an MSc degree at a recognized institute for higher education.
  • Background: this depends on the specific project.
  • Excellence: your Grade-Point-Average should be above 8 (10). Also your MSc thesis should have received a grade above 8 (10).
  • English: you should be able to communicate well in english (written and oral). Provide TOEFL/IELTS scores if available.
  • Originality: your MSc thesis or later work (publications) should reflect some original ideas. Critical and independent thinking is very important.
  • Team player: you should be able to work well in a team of other project members.
Your resume should contain contact information of prior advisors/supervisors who can provide feedback.
